A History of High Plains Band Camp

High Plains Band Camp, located on the campus of Fort Hays State University, is recognized as one of the major music camps in the United States. Started in 1947 by the late Harold G. Palmer, the camp celebrated its 60th season in 2007. From the very beginning, the camp's basic philosophy has been to offer the very best opportunity possible for instrumental students and their teachers to study the art of music.

Each day, the campers are involved in approximately seven hours of music activities, supported by a well balanced program of social activities. Students have the opportunity to work with the guest soloists both in daily workshops and in private lessons. There is a $15 charge for a private lesson. All campers stay in the campus dorms unless special arrangements are made with the camp director.
