Tigers in Service
This student-run program is designed to match volunteers with service opportunities in the Hays area. Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Center for Civic Leadership, and the Office of Student Affairs, Tigers in Service is a clearinghouse for students with a desire to participate in community service activities.

Outstanding Tigers Award Ceremony 2008

On Sunday, March 30th, 2008 about 35 Tigers In Service volunteers and supporters gethered to celebrate the service work that was accomplished for the '07-'08 school year and kick off the first anual Civic Engagement Week. Certificates were handed out to all of the present volunteers and a few volunteers shared heart-warming stories about their experiences with Tigers In Service.

There were two special guests that joined in the celebration of civic service, the Mayor of Hays, Troy Hickman, and the Provost of FHSU, Dr. Larry Gould. Mayor Hickman and Dr. Gould spoke about the importance of being civically engaged and thanked the volunteers for the hard work they contribute. Both of our guests signed a proclamation to show their support for Civic Engagement Week, it was certainly a sight to see!

"It absolutely astounds me how much people can do with the right state of mind. This was my first T.I.S. trip and I was blown away by everyone there putting others before them. It was an amazing time with even more amazing people to work beside and build relationships that will last. I will remember it for a long time to come and can't wait to go back!"

"Tigers In Service has given me the tools and opportunities I need to utilize service and volunteering throughout the rest of my life. I know that I will continue to be a volunteer; not only because I choose to, but because I feel it's my duty. I will definitely incorporate various service learning activities in my future classroom because I feel so strongly about helping others. Tell your siblings and friends who are coming to FHSU about Tigers In Service. Spread the wealth...TIS is one of the most rewarding experiences I've had at FHSU!"

Outstanding Tigers Award Ceremony 2007

On the afternoon of Sunday, April 1, 2007 in the Cody Commons, nearly 100 Tigers In Service (TIS) volunteers along with their families, friends, the FHSU Campus, and the Hays Community gathered to recognize other volunteers for their commendable volunteering efforts throughout the year. Volunteers received certificates and eight students who had been on at least one Alternative Break gave amazing, life-changing testimonies about their experiences. Not only was this a great opportunity for the volunteers to share stories, videos, and pictures, but it also gave a chance for others to hear about the Tigers In Service Alternative Breaks as well as other great TIS projects.

Never doubt that a small young group of thoughtful, committed citizens could change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has.
~ Margaret Mead

Dr. Curt Brungardt, director of the Center for Civic Leadership, gave the welcome to start the event. SPURS, the 2005-2006 Volunteer Organization of the Year recipients, were recognized and presented certificates. Then, students Craig Stramel, Megan Augustine, Lance Rack, Bunny Hayes, Shannon O'Shea, Melissa Augustine, Ryan Small, and Jennifer Meyer gave testimonies about their trip experiences. Melanie Elliot, Operation S.O.S. (Support Our Soldiers) presented Tigers In Service with a Certificate of Appreciation for the volunteers' efforts on the past three Make a Difference Days from the 32nd Medical Logistics Battalion. Lastly, Bill Ring, American Red Cross Director, recognized the parents and grandparents for their help in shaping the volunteers into the amazing people they are today.

Outstanding Tiger Testimonies

I am Craig Stramel, a 22-year old senior in college. My life has not been the same since I went to New Orleans in January of ’06 to help with hurricane recovery from Katrina. I went with a group of students from Fort Hays State University, where I go to school. Tigers In Service, an on campus organization that connects students with volunteer opportunities, set up this trip. We hardly knew each other’s names when we left Hays, KS. We didn’t know what to expect. We worked three hard days, gutting two different houses that had been flooded for a month after the storm. Our group leaders, a retired couple from Indiana, were extremely inspirational. We got the opportunity to meet and talk with the owners of both houses we gutted. Their stories touched us. Upon returning to Hays, we were like brothers and sisters. This was my trip in a nutshell.
This trip made me a better person and opened my eyes to the realm of public service. I saw what the disaster had done to the people of the coast. I listened to their stories and experienced their warmth as they thanked us over and over. Some even offered us money, but we did not take it. When it was all said and done, we looked back and thought to ourselves, “we feel like we got more out of the trip than we put into it,” having only worked for three days. We gained so much from this priceless experience, but the fact is, we did so much more than gut a couple houses. We gave those people someone to talk to. We gave those people an open hand. We gave those people hope.

New Orleans , Louisiana, Port Arthur, Texas,
Chicago , Illinois, Denver, Colorado.
Gulfport , Mississippi, San Diego, California,
Just to let you know, to these places we did go!

Many hours we’ve traveled,
In those comfy Fort Hays vans,
To reach out to those around us,
To lend a helping hand.

Some of you gave a week,
Some of us gave more,
To step outside the box called Hays,
And open other doors.

We were not disappointed by giving of our time
To those less fortunate than us.
We got more back than we had given,
And found service is a must.
