This student-run program is designed to match volunteers with service opportunities in the Hays area. Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Center for Civic Leadership, and the Office of Student Affairs, Tigers in Service is a clearinghouse for students with a desire to participate in community service activities.

Hurricane Relief

In light of the aftermath of the recent hurricanes that ripped through the Gulf of Mexico, Tigers In Service decided they needed to take action. Immediately after Hurricane Katrina, Tigers In Service coordinated a fund raiser for the victims in Louisiana and Mississippi. Donation boxes were set up throughout the FHSU campus and local restaurants agreed to donate a portion of their proceeds on one day during the relief effort.

Through both projects, Tigers In Service raised around $2,500. After Hurricane Rita struck just weeks later, TIS decided a monetary donation wasn’t enough. For Make A Difference Day 2005, Tigers In Service coordinated a service project to collect school supplies for the hurricane victims. The project raised over 500 pounds of supplies to be sent to victims in the Gulf States.

Over 40 Tigers In Service volunteers have also taken trips to the disaster areas over their winter and spring breaks. The first trip occurred in January of 2006 and the second trip occurred in March of 2006. More information about these trips can be found by clicking the links at the top of this page.

On April 22, National Youth Service Day 2006, members of the entire Fort Hays campus came together to collect cleaning supplies for schools along the Gulf Coast damaged by the hurricanes. Check out the National Youth Service Day link for more information.
