Department of Communication Studies
The department offers a broad range of courses leading
to the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees. Courses focus
on human communication behaviors. Coursework is designed to improve
oral message sending and relational communication skills, to foster
creative dramatic talents, to develop journalistic skills, to promote
expertise in public relations, and to prepare teachers of communication,
journalism, and theatre.
In addition, Communication Studies department courses
are a popular option for students majoring in other departments
such as business.
Undergraduate Degrees
The department's philosophy reflects the belief
that students majoring in communication studies should be exposed
to all areas of the field. In consultation with their advisor,
students develop their programs by taking courses in general communication,
journalism, theatre, and related areas of communication. Majors
complete a "Communication Core" consisting of 16 hours, plus an
additional 24 hours in the area of emphasis. Students in the
secondary education speech communication program must meet the
specific departmental and certification requirements outlined
for that program. A minimum of 40 hours is required for a major.
At least one-third of the coursework must include upper-division
courses. Coursework for transfer students is determined by evaluating
prior coursework in communication.

Graduate Degrees
Master
of Science (Communication)
The graduate program is designed to give
added depth to the student's knowledge in the field. Specialized
areas of study in the graduate program may be selected from general
communication, communication education, journalism, public relations,
and theatre. If a student wishes, it is possible to develop a generalized
program of study which would include coursework from all areas of
the department.
