Acceleration Mechanisms
FHSU has instituted numerous programs and policies
that afford students the opportunity to accelerate their degree
programs if they so desire. These programs and policies are:
Advanced Placement (AP)
Advanced Standing Credit-Local Examinations
American Council on Education (ACE)
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Credit by Examination - Excelsior Examinations
DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST)
International Baccalaureate (IB)
Advanced Standing for RN (NCLEX)
World Education Services
Advanced Placement (AP)
The university cooperates with high schools offering
courses in the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance
Examination Board. Students who have completed College Board Advanced
Placement Tests should have a report of the scores sent to the Office
of the Registrar. The university accepts scores of 5, 4, or 3 and
is reviewed on an individual basis. A grade of "CR" is
awarded on the student's transcript.
Advanced Standing Credit-Local
Examinations
An enrolled student or prospective student who
subsequently enrolls will be permitted to earn university credits
or advanced standing by examination if the student appears to have
unusual qualifications. A prospective student or a regularly enrolled
student of college rank who, because of maturity, wide reading,
courses taken in nonaccredited colleges, or other off-campus preparation,
believes to have superior knowledge and knows the content of a given
university course, may petition the appropriate department chair
for an advanced standing examination. No petition can be granted
after the student has enrolled in, or taken for credit, or audited
courses which in any degree duplicate the course sought or courses
which may be considered in advance of the course requested without
permission of the department chair. If in support, the chair will
make a recommendation to the provost. If the petition is granted,
the student will pay the non-refundable fee and will arrange with
the appropriate department chair to prepare and administer the examination.
A grade of "CR" credit will be recorded on the transcript
for an enrolled student who successfully completes an examination.
An interested student should consult the department chair on eligibility
and for more information.
Procedures
1. Must be a regularly enrolled student
or a prospective student who subsequently enrolls.
2. Student submits request to department chairperson to take advanced
standing examination.
3. Appropriate department chairperson submits letter via campus
or e-mail to provost giving permission for student to take advanced
standing examination. Letter should include:
a. Student's local address
b. Student's social security number
c. Course title, number, and credit hours
d. Very brief explanation as to why student is requesting permission
to test out
4. Provost approves/disapproves and sends letter to department chairperson
with a copy to student.
5. Student takes copy of approval letter to Student Fiscal Services
Cashier Office (SH110-G) and pays fee of $25 for each course.
6. Student then takes receipt from Student Fiscal Services Cashier
Office to the department chairperson who makes arrangements for
the exam.
7. Department chairperson notifies the Registrar's Office if student
passes or fails exam. If student passes, student is given appropriate
number of hours of credit for the course. "CR" is recorded
on the transcript indicating the student passed.

American Council on Education
(ACE)
Military Service Credit
Enrolled students may earn college credit for educational experiences
in the armed services. Credit is awarded based on the recommendations
in the American Council on Education
Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed
Services. It is suggested that veterans attach a copy of DD Form
214 to the application for admission. Veterans also may wish to
consult a transcript analyst in the FHSU Office of the Registrar
to determine the appropriate military records required for an evaluation
of the armed services experience. A grade of CR (Credit) will be
recorded on the transcript for all approved credit. Credit will
count toward fulfilling degree requirements. However, no credit
will be awarded that is a pre-requisite for a course previously
passed.
College Level Examination
Program (CLEP)
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
is a national credit-by-examination program that enables students
to demonstrate a level of achievement and competency for the purpose
of obtaining university credit. CLEP tests are designed to measure
the extent of knowledge a student has already acquired and to reward
it by awarding university credit. Students enrolled in a regular
semester or summer term may earn credit hours toward fulfilling
degree requirements through successful completion of CLEP examinations.
A grade of "CR" (Credit) is recorded on the transcript
for successful completion of an examination that is accepted for
credit. However, no credit is awarded for an examination that is
a prerequisite for a course previously passed. Students should consult
their academic advisors and/or the transcript analysts in the Registrar's
Office for specific information on how the successful completion
of an examination applies to their degree program. Students should
contact the Kelly Center Testing Services Office for information
on test appointments, requirements, and cost. The national CLEP
Web site maintains comprehensive information on the CLEP testing
program. A list of official CLEP policies at FHSU is available on
the CLEP
Credit Policy Chart.
Credit by Examination
- Excelsior Examinations (formerly
ACT PEP and Regents College)
Enrolled students also may earn college credit
through Excelsior exams. A grade of "CR" is recorded on
the transcript for successful completion of each exam. Credit counts
toward fulfilling degree requirements; however, no credit is awarded
for exams in a course that is a pre-requisite for a course previously
passed. FHSU accepts credit by examination as described above. Departments
determine minimum test levels. If a student meets those minimums,
a grade of "CR" is recorded on the student's transcript.
A list of official Excelsior Examinations policies at FHSU is available
on the Excelsior
Examinations Credit Policies page. Students should consult the
Office of the Registrar for specific information on test scores
and how the successful completion of the examinations apply to their
degree programs. Contact Excelsior
College, 7 Columbia Circle, Albany, New York, 12203-5195, 578-464-8500,
for application forms, costs, and testing dates.

DANTES Subject Standardized
Tests (DSSTs)
DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs) provide
an opportunity for students to obtain college credit for what they
have learned in non-traditional ways. Designed originally for the
military, DSSTs are available to civilian students and adult learners
as well. The DSST program is used by colleges and universities to
award college credit to those who demonstrate that they have knowledge
comparable to someone who completed the classroom course in the
subject. Students enrolled in a regular semester or summer term
may earn credit hours toward fulfilling degree requirements through
successful completion of DSSTs. A grade of "CR" (Credit)
is recorded on the transcript for successful completion of an examination
that is accepted for credit. However, no credit is awarded for an
examination that is a prerequisite for a course previously passed.
Students should consult their academic advisors and/or the transcript
analysts in the Registrar's Office for specific information on how
the successful completion of an examination applies to their degree
program. Students should contact the Kelly Center Testing Services
Office for information on test appointments, requirements, and cost.
The national DANTES Web
site maintains comprehensive information on the DSST testing program.
A list of official DANTES policies at FHSU is available on the DANTES
Credit Policy Chart.
International Baccalaureate
(IB)
The International Baccalaureate subject test
is one way to earn college credit by examination. These exams are
given in high schools by International Baccalaureate. Credit (CR)
will be recorded on the transcript as transfer credit would come
in. Student who have completed any of the IB tests should have International
Baccalaureate forward an official report of their scores to the
Office of the Registrar at Fort Hays State University. Students
completing IB studies in the United States should request an official
score report from International Baccalaureate North America, 200
Madison Avenue, Room 2403, New York, NT 10011, (212) 696-4464.
