Academic Advising
Academic advising is a connecting
point for all Fort Hays State University students. At FHSU,
we believe in the importance of academic advising, so each
of our students has been assigned an advisor. An advisor is
a faculty member or trained professional with whom you have
the opportunity to meet with and talk to one-on-one about
your academic program and your career/life goals--but you
need to take the initiative. Your advisor helps you plan your
course of study and makes suggestions in your program planning.
He or she may help you with investigating careers. An advisor
may refer you to other faculty or offices for help.
You should contact your advisor when you have
academic related questions or issues. Advisors can be reached
during office hours, by e-mail, phone, regular mail or you
can check with the department office to see when your advisor
is available. Faculty advisors also teach classes and work
on academic research, so advisement hours may be limited.
If you are unable to make contact with your advisor, you may
want to send a note or call your advisor to set up an appointment.
Each semester before registering, you should
do some thinking and planning. Review the Catalog to become
familiar with your major, general education requirements,
and the policies and procedures of FHSU. Your advisor can
guide you in decision making, but the choices are yours to
make.

Academic
advising will be part of the first steps, and the last steps
to becoming another successful FHSU graduate and lifelong
learner. Advising is an integral part of the university learning
experience.
We have developed an effective advising plan
that should enhance the university experience by meeting the
needs and expectations of students, faculty, staff and FHSU.
Our advising is based on a system of shared responsibility
between advisors and students. Advisors are available to assist
students in developing their educational plans and help them
examine the vast experiences and opportunities available at
FHSU.
The University offers a variety of resources.
Students should visit regularly with their advisors to evaluate
their plans. They also should visit with other students, faculty
and staff to become aware of different experiences. Publications
and online sources provide another avenue for timely and accurate
information.
FHSU offers you the opportunity to receive a
first-class education. I hope each of you will use the resources
available to develop a life experience of which you can be
proud.
